What Should You Check Before Epoxying a Golf Club?

Before you mix the epoxy, dry-fit the club first. This is your chance to catch a poor fit, blocked hosel, incorrect length or weight problem while everything can still be taken apart.

A few minutes of checking now is much easier than pulling the shaft again later.

Does the Shaft Seat Correctly?

Insert the shaft into the hosel or adapter without epoxy and check the fit. The shaft should reach the intended insertion depth without being forced.

If it stops early, don't just push harder. Check for old epoxy, debris, an incorrect shaft or hosel size, or another obstruction.

Also check for excessive looseness. If the shaft and hosel are intentionally different sizes, use the correct fitting solution, such as an appropriate shim, rather than relying on epoxy to fill an excessive gap.

If the dry fit is wrong, fix the fit before you glue anything.

Is the Ferrule in the Right Position?

If the build uses a ferrule, include it in the dry fit. Check its position and make sure the shaft can still reach the intended insertion depth.

It is much easier to correct the ferrule position now than after the clubhead has been bonded.

Is the Playing Length Correct?

Dry-fit the head and shaft, then check the playing length before final assembly.

Do not assume the finished club will be the correct length just because the shaft was measured beforehand. The final playing length depends on how the shaft actually seats in the clubhead.

If the shaft still needs butt trimming, confirm the required length before final assembly.

Do You Need to Check Swing Weight?

If you are building to a specific swing weight, check it during the dry fit.

Playing length, head weight, shaft, grip and any additional weights can affect the finished result. If a tip weight or another adjustment is needed, work this out before the club is permanently assembled.

If exact swing weight is not part of your build target, you do not need to turn every repair into a full swing-weight fitting exercise.

Is Everything Ready for Epoxy?

Before mixing the epoxy, make one final check:

  • The hosel is clean and properly prepared.
  • The shaft tip is properly prepared.
  • The shaft reaches the intended insertion depth.
  • The ferrule fits and is positioned correctly.
  • The playing length is correct.
  • Any required shim or tip weight has been determined.
  • Any required shaft orientation has been marked.

If these points are correct, you are ready for final assembly.

Bottom Line

Dry fitting is more than checking whether the shaft goes into the clubhead. It is your last chance to confirm the fit, insertion depth, ferrule position, playing length and build specifications before final assembly.

The rule is simple:

If something is wrong during the dry fit, find the cause and fix it before you mix the epoxy.
