What Are Golf Club Tip Weights and When Should You Use Them?

Golf club tip weights are small weights installed at the shaft tip during club assembly. They are used to add weight near the clubhead and help a builder reach the desired swing weight.

They are commonly used when building or reshafting clubs, but they should only be added when the build actually needs additional head-side weight.

1. When Do You Need a Tip Weight?

Do not choose a tip weight before checking the club.

Club length, head weight, shaft and grip can all affect swing weight. The better approach is to check the build first and then determine whether additional weight is needed.

If the club is below the intended swing-weight target, a tip weight can be used to make a small adjustment.

A common club-building estimate is:

About 2 grams of additional head-side weight ≈ 1 swing-weight point.

This is an approximation, not an exact rule for every club.

2. How Do You Choose the Right Weight?

The process is simple:

  1. Check the club's swing weight.
  2. Compare it with your target.
  3. Estimate how much additional head-side weight is needed.
  4. Select the appropriate tip weight.
  5. Confirm the result before final assembly.

For example, if approximately 4 grams of additional head-side weight is required, a 4 g tip weight may be a starting point.

The important point is to measure first rather than automatically adding weight.

3. Choose a Tip Weight That Fits the Shaft

Steel and graphite shafts may require different tip-weight designs.

Also, a shaft's .335, .355 or .370 tip size refers to its outside diameter. It does not necessarily tell you the internal space available for a tip weight.

Before installation, make sure the weight:

  • is designed for the shaft type;
  • fits correctly inside the shaft tip;
  • provides the amount of weight required.

Do not force an incorrectly sized tip weight into the shaft.

4. Are Tip Weights the Only Option?

No.

Depending on the build, swing weight can also be adjusted with lead tape, interchangeable head weights or other weighting methods.

Tip weights are simply a convenient option when the adjustment needs to be incorporated inside the club during assembly.

Bottom Line

Use a golf club tip weight when a build needs additional weight near the clubhead to reach the intended swing weight.

Check the build first → determine the weight needed → choose a tip weight that fits the shaft → confirm the result before final assembly.

Tip weights are for fine adjustment, not something that every club automatically needs.
